Stanly County and Alcoa close to settlement

from the Stanly News and Press - -

Monday, April 22, 2013 — Stanly County Board of Commissioners met with representatives of ALCOA on Monday morning at the Stanly County Airport for the purposes of a having a closed session to discuss the 401 water quality permit intervention, APGI’s public records request lawsuit and to discuss economic development.

Following the meeting Monday morning County Manager Andy Lucas provided a statement composed by the Commissioners.

“The Stanly County Commissioners have reached a consensus to authorize the court attorney to finalize an agreement with ALCOA and ALCOA Power Generating Inc. to settle all outstanding issues associated with Yadkin projects licenses between us,” the statement read.

“The Commissioners have scheduled a vote for May 6. We believe this agreement is in the best interest of the citizens of Stanly County and we look forward to releasing more details when the agreement is finalized.”

Commissioner Peter Ascuitto provided a short comment on the meeting,

“I’m just very pleased that we sat across the table from ALCOA today and moved forward,” Asciutto said.

After reading Sunday's (4/28/13) Stanly News and Press it sounds as though Tony Dennis is saying that the Commissioners forced Alcoa to do the environmental required-well, I don't think so personally.  Time was running out and the Commissioners have to "save face", they know that Alcoa is/was going to get their license anyway, they just want themselves to look good in the public eye. Hide and watch, they'll be "gloating" saying that they did this and that, when actually they've done "nothing", zilch, zero, notta except fight Alcoa/APGI all the way until the end.  Let's see  $5,000,000.00 plus and counting and it ain't over.

Tony Dennis is trying to justify spending $5 mil.  He's never said a kind word about Alcoa.  He opposed the Clean Tech jobs.  He sneered at the ERI jobs.  He opposed the Badin Lake sediment capping project.  He's held up dissolved oxygen improvements and other advantages of Alcoa's RSA.  Now he's trying to take credit for Alcoa's accomplishments?  Tripe!  Although it does say, in a roundabout way, that Alcoa's done things worth stealing the credit for.  :)

Alcoa's been doing environmental work since at least the 1990s.  Tony Dennis would have more credibility if he'd praised Alcoa's efforts at the time they made them, rather than at the 11th hour when he and Dunevant are about to be outvoted by the rest of the Commission.

I did, however, like the admission he made that he and his Dad used to take what he thought were toxic materials out to bury them, without saying a word until years later.  :-D
