A forest fire on Bald Mountain in Davidson County began Sunday evening 11/25 and burned 115 acres before being contained. Bald Mountain is located on the eastern shore of Tuckertown reservoir a little north of Newsom. Land there is included in the land conservation provision of Alcoa's Relicensing Settlement Agreement and Davidson County has expressed interest in a park there. Rainfall in the region is about 7 to 10 inches below average so far this year, and conditions have been very dry since mid-September.
Historically, there was a quarry located there in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The quarry produced slate and gravel and provided the stone used in the construction of the High Rock Dam and Powerhouse. Alcoa's cultural resources survey found the imposing ruins to be eligible for the National Register.
